Coastal walk part 2 b

Mileaters 24th August 2017
Assault on the West Face of Golden Cap, or the mysterious case of attempted poisoning on Stonebarrow Hill

All seemed calm and orderly when 12 good folk of Martinstown (and 2 ferocious hounds) set out on the second running of Leg 2 of the Coast Path from Lyme Regis to Seatown. Queues for the Melplash Show safely negotiated and the X51 safely boarded in Chideock (some of us even had to pay !) we arrived in Lyme, only to find the tide still too high for access to the beach to be gained.

With the Leader's street-cred seriously impacted, an hour's adjournment for coffee was the decision, after which our merry band duly joined the other fossils on the beach ; a difficult mile of rock-hopping and wave-avoiding followed before we reached Charmouth to face the first of the day's climbs. Needing a pause for breath, lunch was called for at the top, where our enjoyment of the fine views to Start Point was broken by the discovery that Stuart's coffee had a suspiciously "off" taste. Who was the culprit ? The case remains open.

Coastal walk part 2 i

Refreshed (except for Stuart) we continued along the undulating route where young Izzy  was fined 3 times for running, before Golden Cap loomed large above us; and a steep climb up the west face it was too, but the views were superb along the coast in both directions, and well worth the effort. While we regrouped and took on liquid (Stuart was still not risking the coffee), parascenders soared above us effortlessly - their flight a lot easier than our ascent.

Safe in the knowledge that the hard work was now behind us, the promise of a pint at "The Anchor" in Seatown spurred us on down the knee-wrenching slope to journey's end.

Spectacular scenery indeed, and now we can look ahead to more of the same, up Thorncombe Beacon !

Well done all.
