Mileaters Out and About
– Piddle Valley 29

IMG 3272 little piddle
17 Mileaters met on the Village Green and set off to the familiar watering hole of the Thimble at Piddlehinton for a walk which some long standing members were heard to remark covered some footpaths they had not walked before!

From the pub, we headed out past the Millenium Green and through Combe bottom up to the road linking the valley to the top Sherborne road.  Here we headed south and stopped for a coffee break at the halfway mark with a view over Dorchester in the distance.  Here there was a clear view over fields at risk from 4500 new houses likely to be included in the Dorset Council local plan presently being worked on.

We continued through large fields of healthy looking crops of wheat and barley until we returned to the more intimately sized fields of the Piddle Valley.  Our route passed through a recently established vineyard of some considerable size.  Gerald noted that they were a little behind with their bud rubbing (!) and appeared to be growing varieties usually associated with champagne making.

Towards the end of the walk, we passed by the site of the old village of Little Piddle where Rosie explained some of the history of the settlement. The distance walked was 5.8 miles.

From there it was back to the Thimble for a well earned drink and lunch which was the usual high standard we have come to expect from this pub.
