Mileaters walk Minterne Magna.

IMG 5203

On Wednesday 13 November 19 Mileaters and 4 dogs walked from Minterne Magna Church (a few miles north of Cerne Abbas). The weather forecast was good for the morning with rain predicted for early afternoon and as luck would have it, the first drops fell as we were safely back in our cars at 1.15 pm.

The circuit was new for the majority of walkers and those who had done it before enjoyed a varied and interesting walk of around 5.5 miles. Stuart added to the interest by reading out some factoids along the route that had us all thinking which was true and which was false as even the most far fetched facts seemed plausible. Only two people thought that a gargoyle had fallen off the church at Minterne Magna in the 1800’s and killed the mother of the bride during the wedding ceremony. Fortunately this factoid was false!

Due to the very wet month we have just experienced there was a lot of mud in places, especially around gates into fields but these were just passable without any major incident.

Lunch was taken at the Hunter’s Moon pub in Middlemarsh which was a very pleasant end to a succesful walk.

The Mileaters

The village walking group began some 25 years ago with the aim of walking the Dorset Coast Path, in sections, from the Devon border to Sandbanks. Subsequently the reverse route from Sandbanks to Devon has been undertaken.

We are a friendly group of local residents, ex-residents, and colleagues from the area, who meet on a fortnightly basis to enjoy the diversity of the wonderful Dorset countryside. We take it in turns to lead a walk with most members being allotted a fortnight's slot twice a year. The choice of distance, location, and day within that fortnight is at the discretion of the fortnightly leader, but walks (anywhere in Dorset) are usually between 4 and 8 miles.

Walk details are distributed by email. A picnic lunch is often carried in the Summer, but a pub lunch in the Winter is the norm - rehydration is de rigueur! Generally we meet on the Village Green at 10.00 a.m.
