A warm welcome
awaits you at...
The Brewer's Arms
...a traditional country pub in the picturesque village of Martinstown, just outside Dorchester in Dorset. Owned by Ben and Leanne Carter and run by their family and a fantastically friendly team – they pride themselves on their locally-sourced, homemade food, cask ales and friendly atmosphere.

With a large car park, sunny courtyard garden and great location close to the Jurassic Coast, South Dorset Ridgeway and Maiden Castle, the pub is a popular ‘stop-off’ for walkers, cyclists and visitors to the West Country.

The pub was originally built as a girl’s school in 1848 and converted into the village inn in 1865 when the beer came from the Brewery House opposite. In the early years, the pub was particularly popular with farmers washing their sheep in the washing pool just up the lane in front of the pub. The washing pool is still there and now acts as the starting point for the annual Duck Race which sees hundreds of plastic ducks “racing” each other down the stream.

There are two beautiful en-suite Bed & Breakfast rooms with their own private entrances. Dogs are welcome in the pub and as overnight guests with their owners in the spacious guest rooms.

WELCOME to
THE MERCHANT OF ST. MARTIN
...the local community store and Post Office!

HAVE YOU NOTICED?!

Now we have not only a village shop, but ‘The Merchant of St Martin’.  I’m guessing opinions on the new name will, like views on Marmite, range from ‘Ugh!’ to ‘Lovely!!’, or maybe simple bafflement.  ?

Whatever people’s thoughts, our aim is to provide a range of goods from the ‘less likely to find elsewhere’ to the essentials we all need at a reasonable price. And with food items especially, we endeavour to source as many as possible in Dorset. Our prices won’t always match the buying power of the supermarkets, but we do provide a more personal and hopefully enjoyable service for the Winterbourne valley and wider community. Our stock is constantly expanding, and if we don’t have it, we’ll do our best to order it for you.

We now have five bakeries providing artisan products: sourdough bread, croissants, focaccia bread, cinnamon swirls, pain au raisin, cakes galore and more.

On the savoury side, the pork pies, black pudding/sausage rolls, scotch eggs, with a tub of curry mayonnaise, barely settle in before being whisked off by customers. (Yes, we reserve items!)

Our inside and outside café areas are increasingly popular. So, if you want to relax with a tea, coffee, a sweet or savoury treat and watch the world go by, or natter with a friend, are a cycling group booking a rest stop (25 cyclists last Monday), or a military parade (fifty-two hot drinks in an hour ?) all are welcome.

Finally, Michaela and I want to thank our wonderful staff, without whom we would not be able to keep the doors open.

But WE NEED MORE PEOPLE from the community to work in the shop and post office, as paid staff or volunteers. If interested, please contact us on 07394 163080
